Turmeric Essential Oil: Scent, Uses & How It Differs from Turmeric Powder
When it comes to turmeric, most people think of the bright yellow powder in curry or of "golden milk". Turmeric essential oil, however, is something completely different: a clear, steam-distilled oil with a warm, earthy scent, intended for room fragrance and scent blends. Here you'll learn what makes turmeric oil special, how it differs from turmeric powder and how to use it safely.
What is turmeric essential oil?
Turmeric oil is obtained from the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa). Turmeric belongs to the ginger family, making it a close relative of ginger and cardamom. The root is used – more precisely, the underground rhizome, which is a vivid orange inside.
Our turmeric oil is obtained by steam distillation and comes from India. There, turmeric has a tradition going back thousands of years: as a spice in Indian cuisine, as a dye for fabrics and in religious and festive customs, for example at weddings. India is still the most important growing country for the plant today.
Turmeric oil vs. turmeric powder: the key difference
This is where the most common misunderstanding lies. Turmeric powder is the dried, ground root – with everything it contains, including the yellow pigment curcumin. Turmeric essential oil, on the other hand, only contains the volatile aromatic compounds of the root, which rise with the steam during distillation.
- Curcumin is not volatile and does not pass into the essential oil during distillation. Turmeric oil is therefore not a "curcumin oil" and doesn't have the intense colouring power of the powder.
- Different use: turmeric powder is a food and a spice. Our turmeric essential oil is a fragrance oil for rooms and for heavily diluted external use – not for consumption.
- Claims don't carry over: what you may read in the media or in advertising about curcumin, turmeric powder or turmeric extracts cannot be transferred to turmeric essential oil. We regard turmeric oil exclusively as a fragrance oil.
The scent: warm, earthy, spicy
Turmeric oil smells warm and earthy with a spicy, slightly woody depth. If you've ever cut into a fresh turmeric root, you'll recognise its character – but in the oil it feels softer and rounder.
- Top note: fresh and spicy, slightly reminiscent of ginger
- Heart note: earthy, warm, rooty
- Base: subtly woody
- Scent family: spices / roots
Turmeric oil is most comparable to a milder, earthier ginger oil. It brings a calm, grounded note to blends and pairs particularly well with citrus, spices and woods.

- Do not ingest: turmeric oil is neither a food nor a food supplement.
- Children: keep out of the reach of children.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: consult a professional beforehand.
- Pets: cats in particular are sensitive to essential oils. Read our guide Essential oils and pets.
