Our Oil of the Month

Swiss stone pine grows at 1,500 to 2,500 metres, where hardly any other tree can survive. It takes its time – and the wood is correspondingly dense, the wood we steam-distil the oil from.

The scent is resinous and woody with a slightly sweet note, softer than spruce or pine and without their sharp edge. As a heavy base note it lingers in the room long after citrus oils have faded.

September is just the right time for it: in the diffuser on dark evenings, in the sauna infusion at the start of the season, or two drops on a piece of wood in your wardrobe.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are volatile plant extracts obtained from blossoms, leaves, barks, roots or fruit peel. They hold the scent of the plant in highly concentrated form. When you buy 100 % pure essential oils from us, you get an unadulterated natural product – free of synthetic fragrances and extenders.

How are essential oils produced?

Most essential oils are obtained by steam distillation: hot steam releases the aromatic compounds from the plant material. Citrus oils such as lemon or orange are usually cold-pressed from the peel to preserve their zesty freshness.

How can you tell a high-quality essential oil?

Look for clear labelling: the botanical name in Latin, the country of origin, the extraction method and a batch number. Terms such as “fragrance oil”, “perfume oil” or “nature-identical” usually do not describe a pure essential oil. At Casse-Q, every label carries the botanical name, country of origin and batch number.

How do you use essential oils?

The options are varied. The most common are:

  • In a diffuser or as room fragrance: 3 to 5 drops in 150–200 ml of water for an average room.
  • As a sauna infusion: 5 to 10 drops per litre of infusion water, never neat on the stones.
  • As a raw material for your own recipes: if you make your own soaps, bath salts or scent projects, you'll find the ingredients here. Responsibility for the finished recipe lies with the person who makes it.

Can you blend essential oils?

Yes. What matters is the balance of top, heart and base notes: light citrus is there immediately, herbal and floral parts follow, woody base notes carry for hours. Ready-made compositions are under Essential Oil Blends.

How should essential oils be stored?

Cool, dark and tightly closed. UV light and oxygen cause oxidation, which changes both scent and colour. Use citrus oils within a year; woody and resinous oils keep considerably longer.

Why essential oils from Casse-Q?

We source our oils from selected producers and obtain the supplier's certificate of analysis for every batch. Filling is done by hand in Germany, in small batches. Every label carries the botanical name, country of origin and batch number – so you can trace what's in the bottle.

Scent is more than a passing smell. It shapes how a room feels, and it attaches itself to memories. Why pure makes the difference

“Fragrance oil”, “aroma oil” and “perfume oil” are not protected terms – behind them sit mostly lab-made scent compounds, often dissolved in alcohol or a carrier oil. A pure essential oil, by contrast, is the unaltered distillate or pressing of a single plant.

The difference shows above all over time: a synthetic scent smells the same from the first minute to the last, because it was built that way. A natural product consists of dozens of compounds with different vapour pressures – the light molecules reach the air first, the heavy ones last.

Which scent suits which room?

  • Living room: warm, balanced compositions that stay pleasant over longer run times – Sonnenruhe or Waldliebe, for example.
  • Study: clear, herbal notes such as Frischegeist or Kräuterwind.
  • Bathroom: fresh components such as lemon, lime or eucalyptus.
  • Bedroom: lavender or Swiss stone pine, sparingly dosed – two drops are often enough here.
  • Terrace and garden house: citrus oils such as lemongrass or grapefruit, combined with a woody base note that holds up in the warmth.

Four tips for scenting a room

  1. Less is more. Start with 3 to 5 drops in the diffuser. Pure oils go a long way.
  2. Air the room first, then scent it. Room fragrance is no substitute for oxygen.
  3. Intervals beat continuous running. The nose adapts to a constant scent after about fifteen minutes. 15 minutes on, 30 off works better than adding more.
  4. Place it well. Somewhere air circulates, but not in a draught.

Where to start?

The most common beginner's mistake is buying too much choice. Ten small bottles mean ten oils, eight of which are still half full two years later. Three or four oils you actually use up make more sense – or the starter set with ten varieties at 10 ml, if you'd like to try more at once.
