Coriander Seed Oil: Scent, Origin & Uses of the Essential Oil
Coriander divides opinion – at least the fresh leaves do. Coriander seed oil, on the other hand, surprises many people: it doesn't smell like fresh coriander (cilantro) but sweet and spicy, warm and almost a little floral. Here you'll learn what makes coriander seed oil special, where it comes from and how to use it for room fragrance and your own scent blends.
What is coriander seed oil?
Coriander seed oil is obtained from coriander (Coriandrum sativum), an annual plant from the carrot family (Apiaceae) – related to caraway, fennel and dill. The seeds are used, i.e. the small round fruits known as a spice.
Our coriander seed oil is obtained by steam distillation and comes from India. Coriander is one of the oldest spice plants of all: it was already used in ancient Egypt and has been an integral part of Indian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine for centuries. In Germany, the seeds are best known from bread spice, gingerbread and sausages.
The name goes back to the Greek word "koris" (bedbug) – a reference to the strong smell of the unripe plant. Only as they ripen and dry do the seeds develop their pleasantly spicy, sweet scent. That's why ripe, dried seeds are used for distillation.
Coriander seeds vs. coriander leaves
Coriander seeds and coriander leaves come from the same plant but smell completely different. The fresh herb is often described as lemony and green – some people even find it "soapy". The dried seeds, on the other hand, smell spicy, sweet and warm. Our oil is obtained exclusively from the seeds and has little in common with the scent of fresh coriander. So even if you don't like coriander leaves, the seed oil is still worth a try.
The scent: sweet and spicy, warm, soft
Coriander seed oil smells sweet and spicy and slightly sharp, with a soft, herbaceous note. Part of its scent comes from linalool – an aromatic compound you also know from lavender. That's why coriander seed oil is surprisingly gentle and almost floral for a spice oil.
- Top note: fresh, slightly citrusy and spicy
- Heart note: sweet, soft and floral
- Base: warm, subtly woody
- Scent family: spices with a floral facet
The scent is comparable to a blend of mild spice and a hint of lavender. This makes coriander seed oil a versatile bridging oil that connects spicy, citrus and floral scents.
