Cajeput Oil – Scent, Origin & Uses of the Essential Oil
Cajeput oil is one of those essential oils hardly anyone knows by name – even though almost everyone has its relatives, eucalyptus and tea tree, in the cupboard. Its scent is fresh and clear, yet softer and warmer than eucalyptus. In this guide you'll learn where cajeput oil comes from, what it smells like, how to use it in a diffuser, a room spray or the sauna, and what to look out for when buying it and in terms of safety.
What is cajeput oil?
Cajeput oil comes from the cajeput tree, botanically Melaleuca leucadendra (syn. Melaleuca cajuputi). The tree belongs to the myrtle family, making it a close relative of eucalyptus, tea tree and myrtle. To make the essential oil, the leaves are processed by steam distillation. Our cajeput oil comes from China.
The name goes back to the Malay “kayu putih”, meaning “white wood” – a nod to the tree's pale, papery bark. In Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, cajeput oil has been a familiar scent in everyday family life for generations and is traditionally associated with freshness and clarity there. In Europe, on the other hand, it is more of an insider tip for lovers of fresh, herbaceous scents.
The scent: fresh, clear and spicy-camphoraceous
When you open a bottle of cajeput oil, the first thing you notice is the fresh, camphoraceous top note – it immediately reminds you of eucalyptus. After a few moments, though, the difference shows: the heart of the scent is softer, slightly spicy and a little warmer, with a delicate, almost fruity nuance. In the base, a clean, herbaceous-green impression remains.
Scent family: fresh-herbaceous / camphoraceous, related to eucalyptus, tea tree and myrtle. If you like eucalyptus but sometimes find it too sharp, cajeput oil is a rounder alternative.
Ways to use cajeput oil
- In a diffuser: 3–5 drops in 150–200 ml of water are enough for a fresh, clear room scent. You'll find more dosage tips in our diffuser guide.
- In an oil burner: Add 2–4 drops to the water-filled bowl – cajeput works well in a study or hallway.
- As a room spray: 10–15 drops in 100 ml of water with a dash of high-proof alcohol as a solubiliser; shake well before each use. Do not spray onto textiles or furniture.
- In a sauna infusion: In your own sauna, 2–3 drops per litre of infusion water, never neat on the hot stones. Everything you need to know is in our sauna guide.
- In a massage oil blend: For a diluted body oil blend, use 2–3 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil, e.g. almond oil or jojoba oil. Please observe the safety notes below.
Scent blends with cajeput oil
Cajeput oil pairs especially well with citrus, conifer and herbal scents. Three diffuser recipes (each for 150–200 ml of water):
- Clear Breeze: 3 drops cajeput oil, 2 drops lemon oil, 1 drop peppermint oil – fresh, bright and invigorating in scent.
- Forest Walk: 2 drops cajeput oil, 2 drops Swiss stone pine oil, 2 drops spruce needle oil – resinous and green like a walk through a conifer forest.
- Herb Garden: 2 drops cajeput oil, 2 drops rosemary oil, 1 drop lavender oil, 1 drop grapefruit oil – herbaceous with a soft, fruity finish.
Love fresh herbal scents but don't want to mix your own? Take a look at our ready-made blend Herbal Breeze with eucalyptus, thyme, peppermint and rosemary – it has a similarly clear character.
Safety notes
Cajeput oil is a highly concentrated essential oil and carries several hazard statements on its label. Please note:
- Never neat on the skin: Always dilute, at most 2–3 drops in 10 ml of carrier oil. The oil can cause skin irritation and allergic skin reactions.
- Patch test: Before first use, test a small amount of the diluted blend on the inside of your elbow.
- Do not ingest and avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
- Children: Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use on babies or toddlers.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: According to the product labelling, do not use during this time. If in doubt, ask a qualified professional first.
- Pets: Cats in particular are sensitive to essential oils. Read our guide Essential oils and pets.
- Flammable: Keep away from open flames and hot surfaces; store cool and tightly closed. More on this in our guide to storage and shelf life.
Buying cajeput oil: what to look for
- Botanical name: The label should state Melaleuca leucadendra or Melaleuca cajuputi – so it's clear which plant it comes from.
- 100% pure: No dilution with carrier oil, no alcohol, no synthetic fragrances.
- Origin and batch number: Both should be on the label so every bottle can be traced.
- Amber glass bottle: It protects the oil from light.

Frequently asked questions about cajeput oil
What does cajeput oil smell like?
Fresh, clear and spicy-camphoraceous. It is reminiscent of eucalyptus but smells softer and warmer, with a slightly fruity nuance.
What is the difference between cajeput oil and eucalyptus oil?
Both come from the myrtle family, but from different plants. Cajeput oil is obtained from the leaves of Melaleuca leucadendra, eucalyptus oil from eucalyptus species. In scent, cajeput is rounder and a little warmer.
How many drops of cajeput oil for a diffuser?
3–5 drops in 150–200 ml of water are enough for most rooms. Better to start low and add more if needed.
What can cajeput oil be combined with?
It works very well with lemon, grapefruit, peppermint, rosemary, lavender, Swiss stone pine and spruce needle oil.
Can you use cajeput oil for cooking?
No. Our cajeput essential oil is intended for room fragrance and diluted external use and is not for consumption – the label explicitly says “Do not ingest”. Cajeput is not a culinary spice either; in the kitchen, use fresh or dried herbs and spices instead.
Is cajeput oil suitable for the sauna?
Yes, as a fresh, spicy scent note in an infusion: 2–3 drops per litre of water, never pour it undiluted onto the hot stones.
