Christmas Scents with Essential Oils: 6 Blends for Advent and Winter
In short: The oils that smell most like Christmas are orange, cinnamon, clove, star anise, cardamom and ginger – plus conifers such as spruce needle and Swiss stone pine for that Christmas-tree scent. The spice oils are very intense: one or two drops per blend is usually enough, while orange provides a soft, sweet base.

Six Christmas blends for the diffuser
These amounts are for an ultrasonic diffuser with 200–300 ml of water in a room of roughly 15–25 m². For smaller rooms, simply halve each value and keep the spice oils at one drop.
1. Baked apple – sweet, warm, cosy: 3 drops orange, 1 drop cinnamon leaf, 1 drop clove.
2. Gingerbread – spicy and full: 2 drops orange, 1 drop cassia, 1 drop ginger, 1 drop cardamom, 1 drop pimento.
3. Christmas market – like a cup of punch: 3 drops orange, 1 drop star anise, 1 drop cinnamon leaf, 1 drop clove.
4. Christmas tree – for anyone without a real tree: 3 drops spruce needle, 2 drops Swiss stone pine, 1 drop orange.
5. Silent night – calm and solemn: 2 drops frankincense, 2 drops orange, 1 drop Swiss stone pine.
6. Winter morning – clear rather than heavy: 2 drops Swiss stone pine, 2 drops orange, 1 drop cardamom, 1 drop ginger.
Prefer it ready-blended? Winterwärme combines cassia, clove, orange and Swiss stone pine, while Sternenglanz brings together star anise, orange, grapefruit and cardamom.
Cassia or cinnamon leaf – which cinnamon oil?
Both come from cinnamon trees but smell different. Cassia comes from Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) and smells just like cinnamon stars: sweet, strong, round. Cinnamon leaf oil is obtained from the leaves of Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum); it is drier and, thanks to its eugenol content, reminiscent of clove. For bakery scents, cassia is the first choice; for mulled-wine and spice notes, go for cinnamon leaf.
Both oils are very intense and should never be applied undiluted to the skin. In the diffuser, one drop per blend is enough.
The rule of thumb for your own Christmas blends
Two to three parts citrus as a base, one part spice, optionally one part wood or resin. The spices define the character but should never dominate – otherwise the scent quickly turns sharp. If in doubt, start with orange and add a single drop of spice. Better to top up after the first run than to use too much from the start.

Can I drip essential oil onto candles or the Advent wreath?
No. Essential oils are flammable – never add them to the wax of a burning candle, onto the wick or onto fir branches near candles. A diffuser, an oil burner with a water bowl or an aroma stone kept away from the flame are better options.
How do I get a fir scent without a real tree?
Use spruce needle as the main note and a little Swiss stone pine for warmth – blend 4 above. A few drops on wooden balls or pine cones in a bowl also work without a device.
