Wood Care with Essential Oils – How to Keep Cutting Boards Beautiful for Years 🪨

A good wooden cutting board or butcher block can last for years – as long as you care for it properly. Dry, cracked wood isn't just unattractive, it can also become an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. With the right oil care, your wood stays supple, smells pleasantly fresh, and lasts noticeably longer. Here's how it's done.

Why wood needs care in the first place

Wood is a natural, porous material – frequent contact with water and air-drying gradually strips it of its natural oils and makes it brittle. Cracked wood absorbs moisture and odors more easily, which can become unhygienic, especially with kitchen items like cutting boards. Regular oiling seals the surface, makes it more water-resistant, and helps prevent cracking.

The right oil base: castor oil as a foundation

A neutral, rich vegetable oil works particularly well as a base for wood care. Our castor oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers without turning rancid, forming a protective, supple surface. Other neutral base oils work too – the key is that the oil doesn't oxidize and go rancid.

Essential oils for scent and freshness

🍋 Lemon oil
The kitchen classic. Lemon oil leaves behind a fresh, clean scent and is traditionally used to care for wood surfaces.

🍊 Orange oil
Mild, fruity, and pleasant. Orange oil is a great alternative or addition to lemon.

🌲 Cedarwood oil
Harmonizes naturally with the material itself. Cedarwood oil has a warm, woody scent and is traditionally used to help protect wooden furniture from pests, too.

🌿 Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is popular for its fresh, clean scent – many people especially appreciate that crisp smell on kitchen utensils.

DIY recipe: conditioning oil for cutting boards

You'll need:

  • 100 ml castor oil (or another neutral base oil)
  • 5 drops lemon oil
  • 3 drops cedarwood oil

Mix the oils together in a small bottle and shake well. Apply some oil to a clean cloth and rub it evenly into the dry, clean wood – including edges and corners. Let it soak in overnight, then wipe off any excess oil the next day with a dry cloth. Repeat weekly at first, then every few weeks after that, depending on how often the wood is used and washed.

Important note on food contact

⚠️ For cutting boards and other kitchen utensils with direct food contact: the oil must fully absorb, and any excess must be thoroughly wiped off before the next use. Only use the board again once the surface is dry and no longer tacky. Essential oils are highly concentrated – always use them sparingly and only as a small addition to the base oil, never undiluted.
