Ginger Oil – Effects, Uses & How It Differs From Ginger 🫚

Almost everyone knows ginger from the kitchen – spicy, warming, pungent. But essential ginger oil is something quite different from the fresh root or ginger tea: it's a highly concentrated, steam-distilled essence of the root, valued in aromatherapy for its own distinct purposes. Here's what ginger oil is really about, how it differs from ginger as a food, and how to use it.

Ginger oil vs. ginger: what's the difference?

Producing 1 liter of essential ginger oil requires steam-distilling around 25 kg of ginger root – the result is an extremely concentrated essence that isn't directly comparable to the pungent taste of fresh ginger or ginger tea. While you'd use fresh ginger in the kitchen in larger amounts, just a few drops of essential ginger oil are enough for a diffuser or massage oil blend. Important: essential ginger oil is intended solely for external use and room scenting – not for cooking or as a food supplement.

The scent: warm, spicy, invigorating

Our ginger oil (Zingiber officinale) is gently steam-distilled and has a warm, spicy-earthy scent with a characteristic sharpness. In aromatherapy, ginger oil is traditionally associated with energy, warmth, and a sense of fresh starts – an oil for moments when you need a boost.

Ways to use ginger oil

  • In a diffuser: 3-5 drops for a warm, invigorating room scent, especially on cool days
  • In massage oils: Diluted with a carrier oil like almond oil for a warming massage after exercise
  • In blends: Pairs especially well with citrus scents and grapefruit
  • Wintery room scents: Combined with spice oils like cassia oil or clove oil for a warm, festive atmosphere

If you prefer something fresh and cooling, peppermint oil or thyme oil are also invigorating everyday alternatives.

Safety notes

⚠️ Ginger oil is highly concentrated and can irritate the skin if applied undiluted. Always use it diluted in a carrier oil (e.g. 2-3 drops per 10 ml base oil) and do a skin patch test before first use. Do not ingest, keep out of reach of children, and consult a professional beforehand during pregnancy.
